Hello Folks!
If you have come to this blog to learn Azure here are some pointers that may help you in navigating to the chapters and also have a clarity on what can you expect out of the learning path.
1. My approach to this will be very layman like. So I will dive head-on into the portal and cruise through how to move about it.
2. The next step I will get straight to getting the hands dirty with tutorials and terminologies
3. In the process of having a hands-on experience, we will also get into the concepts
If you are new to cloud one thing you need to about this to get it really simply, is
1. Cloud is just another computer for you EXCEPT THAT YOU CANNOT SEE IT/TOUCH IT and THROW IT AWAY IN FRUSTRATION. What does this mean? This means that ANYTHING and EVERYTHING you do on your physical machine or the resources required for it (eg: a network, active directory), is available on the cloud platform. Just like you 'configure' it to work on your physical world, you need to 'configure' it on your cloud world.
2. Since this is a cloud world and we live in a physical world, there will be services to help you connect to these 2 realms. A component in the physical world (for example: a network) can be connected to the the same (eg. cloud virtual network)on the cloud. If this were not there, it would beat the purpose of the cloud invasion.
3. Lets talk money! If you were to go buy a laptop or a computer you obviously would pay for it at once for the product. In Cloud world, you pay for what you use, as long as it is in existence in your cloud world (cloud world = cloud subscription)
4. We shall go places!
Unlike the physical world, the cloud world, for obvious reasons, is not restricted to one location. Hence, when you create anything (well, mostly) in the cloud world, it will allow you to select the location where you want to create it.
5. When you speak of a cloud service, it is a SERVICE offered to you. By nature of which, you are free to CHOOSE what service you want to get out of it. For that we need to know what service is OFFERED to us. In Cloud terminology, this is called as CLOUD MODELS
Azure (Now we talking!) gives you 3 services: Infrastructure, Platform and Software.
Infrastructure: as the dictionary says: the basic physical and organizational structures and facilities needed for the operation of a society or enterprise. This means Azure will provide you everything from the the Basic infrastructure (virtual machine) as a service
Platform: Azure will provide you a platform to host your physical world components
Software: Azure will provide you Software as a service.
Since this is a service, all the maintaining/trouble shooting/implementation is Azure's responsibility. YOU WILL PAY FOR ONLY WHAT SERVICE YOU HAVE ASKED AZURE FOR.
If you have a TV in your home and you cannot see any channels on it, you will call your cable/digital TV operator to fix it. He will LOOK INTO ONLY HIS SERVICE of fixing the connection. Any problems in the TV machine has to be looked at by you. So if you ask for Infra as a service (IaaS) from Azure, Azure looks after everything from the basic virtual machine. If you ask for Platform as a Service from Azure (PaaS) it will look after the maintenance/ implementation/ servicing of ONLY the platform where you host your solution. Software as a Service from Azure (SaaS) will give you only the software maintenance. The infra and your platforms have to be looked after by you.
You could refer to the below self-explanatory diagram too:
If this is clear, we shall now venture into the Azure World. Happy Learning :-)
Takeaway: Cloud Models
